The rumor of Beyonce and Jay Z moving to Schuylkill County started last week and still continue
to to make headlines.

Hollyscoop.com is reporting today that the rumors are true. A black Lamborghini was spotted there just
recently and is believed to belong to the powerhouse couple.

The $12 million mansion is near New Ringgold and sits on 210 acres. It also has beautiful views of
Hawk Mountain and frontage on the Little Schuylkill River. Maybe Jay Z wants a good trout fishing
spot.

No Fireworks for Mahanoy City This Year

MAHANOY CITY - Those bursts of color and light that sizzle in the night sky on Independence Day won't be seen over Mahanoy City this year.

The fireworks have been canceled and organizers are blaming lack of community support.

"This was always a community event, never a fundraiser," Good American Hose Company President Tony Aschman said recently. "All the money we got went into the fireworks."

Aschman said the fireworks cost about $6,500 the past two years, along with the cost of the DJ to entertain the crowd and other miscellaneous expenses.

The fire company and borough fire police provided security at no cost.

The fire company solicited door-to-door for donations and a donation box was placed at the entrance to Alumni Stadium, where the event was held each year.

Donations have been down and for the last two years the company lost about $1,200 each year, according to Aschman.

"We just can't support that kind of loss," he said.

Aschman said the fire company took over the fireworks in the 1970s from the Mahanoy City Lions Club.

"The Lions used to shoot them off at the Sixth Street Playground," Aschman said. "When the group got too small, they were going to give it up, so we took it over rather than see the town without fireworks."

The fireworks moved to the high school football stadium and went off almost yearly until the early 1980s when the educational complex was being built and the stadium torn down.

"There may have been three or four years when we didn't have them because of construction," Aschman said.

Once the buildings and new stadium were in place the event started up again.

Aschman said it is tough to tell how many people attended the yearly event because it is free to the public and a head count is not taken.

Community organizations that sold items at the fireworks events may also lose money.

Both the Mahanoy Area Bear Band Boosters and Midget Football Boosters opened concession stands each year offering food for sale.

"We will definitely miss the money that we earned at the concession stand, and we will definitely need to find an alternate fundraiser to replace the revenue from that event," Kathy Leahy, band booster president said.

"The fireworks have been a part of Mahanoy City's Independence Day celebration as long as I have lived here (since the '80s) and I am very sorry to see them go away," Leahy said. "I have many fond memories of the evenings spent at the stadium while my children were young - watching them gaze at the display with wide-eyed wonder. People from all over the area attended the fireworks and it was a great way to get people into our community, even for one night."

Aschman said, even if someone was generous enough to fund the display, it may be too late to host the event this year, since contracts with the fireworks supplier are usually signed in February.

Other communities

A few years ago, Frackville looked for co-sponsorship for its yearly event.

The Goodwill Hose Company, Frackville, found a co-sponsor in the Schuylkill Mall several years ago, although that meant moving the display to the mall parking lot.

In 2008, Brian Dillman, Goodwill's fireworks committee chairman at the time, said the fire company had been looking for a co-sponsor for a few years.

The fire company sponsored the display for 15 years prior to 2008 and the cost to the company continued to rise, he said.

Dillman blamed insurance costs after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks for the increase.

Schuylkill Mall Manager Elaine Maneval said in 2008 that she hoped the fireworks display could be bigger and better by combining resources.

Contacted on Monday, Maneval said the mall management is still in negotiations with the fire company regarding sponsorship of this year's event. Phone calls to Goodwill Fire Company representatives were not returned.

American Hose Company No. 1 of Ashland will sponsor the annual Thunder Over Ashland fireworks for the 15th year.

According to event co-chairman Phil Groody, the fire company is having no trouble keeping the public's interest or support.

"This year we are adding barbecue pit beef to our food menu along with homemade black kettle bean soup," Groody said. "Along with everything else the cost keeps rising each year which makes a challenge to meet expenses, but the Ashland community has been very good us with strong financial support even in these tough economic times."

Groody said the fire company will distribute donation cans within the next week and contribution letters will be sent to the business community to help defray the cost of the display.

Wynn Ann Restaurant destroyed in Minersville Fire

Fire destroyed the former Wynn Ann restaurant in Minersville friday night. The fire also spread to
several nearby residences and displaced at least four people.

It appears the fire started in the rear of the restaurant, which has been closed for nearly a year.

Its reported that most likely the Wynn Ann, along with 104 Sunbury St. and 106 Sunbury St, will
have to be torn down due to the damage.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal will continue to investigate the fire for foul play.

Hispanic woman charged with ethnic intimidation

Miriam L. Malave had an additional charge of ethnic intimidation filed against her today in Schuylkill County. The charge was added by the District Attorney's office before her preliminary hearing.

The charge was added due to a fight involving Malave in which she yelled, "all whites are going to die tonight". She is already charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person, along with one count each of terroristic threats and harassment from the same Feb. 17th incident at the M&T Bar in Shenandoah.

Malave and three Hispanic men tried to assault three people with baseball bats on Aug. 7, 2006, according to court records.

Swine Flu hits Schuylkill County

First case of swine flue confirmed in Schuylkill County

The first confirmed case of swine flu, or H1N1, has hit Schuylkill County.
The case has been confirmed by Art Kaplan, the director of Schuylkill
County's emergency management agency.

Kaplan was informed by the state Department of Health about the case.
This marks the first confirmed case of swine flu, or H1N1 in Schuylkill County.

Neighboring county, Berks, has the most confirmed cases of swine flu in
Pennsylvania currently with 29.

Worldwide, there have been 12,000 confirmed cases and 86 deaths resulting from
the swine flue or H1N1 so far.

The H1N1 virus is similar to other types of influenza but a little more dangerous due
to how new the virus is and the lack of antibodies present in people.

Symptoms and treatments are also similar to other types of influenza.

Trial set for Luis Eduardo Ramirez death

Brandon J. Piekarsky and Derrick M. Donchak, both of Shenandoah, PA, are scheduled to be tried on April 27th. Both are charged with charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and ethnic intimidation. Piekarsky also is charged with criminal solicitation/hindering apprehension or prosecution and purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of liquor.

A third person originally charged, Colin J. Walsh, will now testify against both Piekarsky and Donchak.

Jury selection is stated to take place April 12th.

Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala, 25, of Shenandoah, was assaulted on July 12, 2008. He died two days later in the hospital. Ramirez Zavala was survived by his fiance Crystal Dillman. The death created racial tensions in Shenandoah in the following months. Both anti-illegal immigration and pro-illegal immigration sides held rallies in Sheandoah.

70 Cats Removed from Pine Grove 'Cat Santuary'

Nearly 70 cats were removed from deplorable conditions at a so called cat sanctuary.

Virginia Kresge Justiniano operated the Cats With No Names sanctuary where approximately 70 cat lived in deplorable conditions that included thousands of drug paraphernalia items. Some cats recovered have health problems as well as a number of cats that were found dead. The dead cats included one who died while trying to get into a box of cat treats.

Justiniano, 50, and her live in boyfriend Andy Oxenrider,38, of Tower City are in Schuylkill County Prison on $25,000 bail related to drug charges.

They may still face charges related to animal neglect and abuse.

Greenwood Hill Fire Co loses membership

Pottsville now has 7 fire companies instead of 8. On Jan. 7th, 2009 the Pottsville Fire Company voted to eliminate Greenwood Hill Fire Co from its ranks.

Greenwood Fire Co failed to respond to at least 20% of its fire calls in 2007 and has been suspended since Nov. 20, 2007.

Jason Glauda, a member from of the Greenwood Fire Co. in Pottsville was astonished to hear the news. He still believes the other 7 fire companies call handle the fires.

The presidential election is finally over. The country overall chose Barack Obama as the president elect and Obama is already deciding what issues to tackle first when he officially takes over as president in January.

Here is Schuylkill County though, John McCain had more votes than Obama. Schuylkill County still has a Republican stronghold for most elections. Jim Rhoades, who died in a auto mobile accident, was reelected by Schuylkill County.

Did that visit by John McCain in Pottsville propel him to victory in Schuylkill County? One has to wonder.

The Philadelphia Phillies are the talk of the town

Seems there are a number of Philadelphia Phillies fans on the Purple Page. The Phillies clinched the National League title last night by defeating the Dodgers.

They will now have to face either the Tampa Bay Rays or the Boston Red Sox. Tampa currently leads the series 3-1.

This will be Philadelphia's first World Series appearance since 1993 when they faced the Toronto Blue Jays. Remember that one? That is when Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams threw the pitch that was homered by Joe Carter and the Blue Jays won the World Series.

The deal for relocating the offices of the Schuylkill County Children and Youth to 500 N.Centre Street in Pottsville fell through.

The major reasons being the lack of parking and also the needed renovations for the building. Had the deal gone through, a $500,000 grant would have been provided for renovations to the new building.

For now, the office will continue looking at other properties.

Coach Shields loses in lawsuit

Schuylkill County Judge Cyrus Palmer Dolbin awarded a former Nativity BVM student $751,000 for sexual assault committed by former coach Daniel M. Shields Jr.

Shields was the track coach for BVM when the assaults occurred. Daniel Shields is currently serving 18 months to 4 years in a state correctional facility. After his release Daniel Shields will have to register as a sexual predator.

In one strange incident,the victime said Shields sent her a Christmas card last year.

An out of court settlement did occur with Nativity BVM High School, where Shields was a coach; the Diocese of Allentown, which operates the school; and the Most Rev. Edward P. Cullen, bishop of Allentown — all had been dismissed from the case earlier this year after a settlement that is confidential at the victim’s request,

Magistrate Reiley Sentence in DUI Case

Pottsville magisterial district judge James Reiley accused of driving under the influence will be in a probationary program for 12 months. The Republican Herald reports Schuylkill County President Judge William Baldwin admitted James Reiley into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program Thursday afternoon. If Reiley completes the program successfully, the charges will be dismissed.

Reiley was charged in June with two counts of DUI.

Man sentenced for Minersville church vandalism

Kevin A. Smith Jr. apologized Wednesday in Schuylkill County Court for vandalizing Minersville's Church of Broken Pieces in February, but still received a prison sentence and extended probation.

"I thought it would be funny," Smith, 18, of Schuylkill Haven, told Judge Jacqueline L. Russell. "I really don't know why I did it."

What he admitted doing was spray-painting the 41 N. Front St. church, which has a primarily African-American congregation, with racist and satanic graffiti, including a swastika and a pentagram, on Feb. 21.

"I'm not really a racist," said Smith, who pleaded guilty Aug. 21 to ethnic intimidation, conspiracy, institutional vandalism, corruption of minors, desecration of venerated objects, criminal mischief and harassment.

What he received for it from Russell was a prison sentence of three to 23 months, plus an additional three years probation, payment of costs, $200 in fines and $300 restitution to the church, 80 hours community service, submission of a DNA sample to law enforcement authorities and mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations.

"I hope you are successful with any kind of treatment you might need," Russell said. "I hope your life starts to turn around."

What he left behind was a horrified congregation that its pastor said still wants to put the incident behind it.

"We are a product of the '60s. It brought back such horrible memories," said the Rev. Gloria Alexander, one of the church's two pastors. "Everyone came together to pray for healing."

Alexander, whose husband, the Rev. Harold, also is a pastor at the church, balanced the sadness she felt and the desire to forgive Smith, and indicated she was satisfied with the sentence.

"The people that I counsel and the young people that came together just find it so hard to understand," she testified. "As a mother, you wish you could protect them. You wish you could spare the young people."

Minersville citizens also rallied to support the church, which Gloria Alexander said has a congregation that is 65 percent African-American. Three days after the incident, 70 volunteers, including 55 Minersville Area High School students, turned out in bitterly cold weather to help remove the graffiti.

"One of the greatest things out of it ... was the students from Minersville," Gloria Alexander said.

Before being sentenced, Smith told Russell he has limited contact with his mother, is not certain where is father is and has a troubled past.

"I started (using drugs) when I was 14," he said. "I was intoxicated when I was brought to the prison. The last time I actually went to church was with my aunt when I was 6 years old."

Russell found the last statement particularly important.

"Perhaps you don't understand how upsetting it is for a group of parishioners to go to their house of worship and see it defiled," the judge told Smith.

Minersville police had charged Smith and a 16-year-old boy with defacing the building, which is the former St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Prosecutors dropped a disorderly conduct charge.

Assistant District Attorney William C. Reiley and Assistant Public Defender Andrea L. Thompson, Smith's attorney, each said afterwards the sentence reflected a proper result.

"I think the church detects a true sense of contrition by the young defendant, who not only learned for himself, but through coverage of the event, hopefully has taught others the effects of misguided attempts at a prank that has such serious consequences," Reiley said.

"I do think he's truly remorseful. I think he learned more from the church's forgiveness than anything else," Thompson said.

Gloria Alexander also told Smith outside the courtroom how much she wants him to learn from the incident.

"I will pray for you that you will get your life together and you will succeed," she said.

The PennDOT Valentine's Day Plowing Fiasco

If you are a resident of Pennysylvania, you had to feel the impact of the recent Valentine's Day snow storm that left many residents stranded on interstates,highways,and roads.

Recently, the Pennsylvania legislature held hearings as to why this happened. The truth is that no one stepped up to the plate and told the truth about it.

One of the main reasons road maintenance was so bad is due to budget rollbacks that cut funding for independent snow plowing. What exactly is this? Well, in the past, besides PennDOT, many independents, including construction firms, were paid to plow areas such as highways and township areas.

Officials gave the typical excuses of poor communication and not responding early enough but this storm still wasn't nearly as bad as past storms such as in 1996.

Schuylkill County-Why are jobs so low paying in this county

Schuylkill County seems to have some of the lowest paying wages around. While this may be good for employers, one has to wonder how to people get by.

If you talk to anyone who makes a good living they will probably tell you that they work out of the county such as in Berks, Dauphin, or Luzerne County.

It is also a well known fact that many college grads do not return to the area and why should they, no high paying white collar jobs are to be found here.

This all seems to contribute to the financial and social stagnation of the whole area. Look inside the local newspaper, such as The Pottsville Republican & Herald, and you will see most jobs are low paying while high paying jobs are usually in the health care field (caring for an aging population) or couseling services (caring for addicted youth and adults). So, add it all up and it is not hard to see why this area continues to lag behind the rest of the state and the country for that matter.

It should also be noted that a lot of individuals cannot speak, read, or write english.

What a poor shithole of a place. Then again where can you buy a house for $8,000 to $10,000.

Is the Purple Page moving soon?

Supposedly, the Schuylkill County Purple Page will be moving to a new home within the next month. The new website will have an easier to remember address, many features that are not currently available, more powerful moderation tools, and the ability of users to choose between posting anonymously or becoming a registered user.

The difference being that members will have access to more features than anonymous users.

Currently, the address for the Purple Page is http://www.members.boardhost.com/purplepage/ and the new address will be ......... well, you will find that out later.

Traffic on the site has been down and hopefully, the new address will provide users with a board setting that they are comfortable with, while at the same time avoiding total chaos.

So, look for something new and different for the Purple Page in the upcoming month or so.

Mr. Shields Trial in Schuylkill County

Probably one of the biggest trials in recent memory is the upcoming Coach Shields trial.

Coach Daniel M. Shields is accused of video taping female students at Nativity BVM High School while they were in various stages of undress in a school dressing room. This has outraged parents who accuse Shields of receiving preferential treatment.

Just recently, the lawyer for Shields, Emmanuel H. Dimitriou, had asked Judge John E. Domalakes for a change in venue for the trial and also separate trials for the charges. Domalakes dismissed the request.

Also, previously, Dimitriou, asked to have the video tapes not entered into evidence saying that police received them illegally. This was due to some teenagers taking the tapes without Shields' knowledge and later handing them over to police. Of course, this was after they viewed the tapes and shared them with friends.

This should be one interesting trial.

Purple Page goes to Registration

I guess it had to eventually happen. Like most forums, the Purple Page now requires registration. Previously, posting was anonymous. This did create a lot of the problems as people would post whatever they wanted by using anonymitity.

It was great to just go there and be able to post right off the cuff. Of course, I see no problem with registering since I don't bash anybody or hide behind my computer. Anything I post is something that I would gladly say to another human being in person.

The only people who would have a problem with the registration would be cowards and those who wish to attack others by name.

I see alot of the regulars have already registered and posted. I think this move will be for the better, especially for people trying to ask a legitimate question and hoping for a helpful answer.

Time will tell I guess. The big discussion so far seems to be the upcoming trial of an ex Nativity football coach who is accussed of taking video of girls at the school without their knowledge. This upcoming case can be seen as akin to the O.J. Simpson trial on a Schuylkill County level.

The biggest thing being talked about within the past few days happens to be a high school football game. The game between Minersvill and Shenandoah has drawn the most posts. While it is great to support the kids playing, one has to wonder who is doing all the bashing - kids or parents. If it is parents, that would show some more classless people who manage to find their way to the Purple Page of Schuylkill County http://www.members.boardhost.com/purplepage/

More posts has to do with such things as contractors, food, and pretty much the same old, same old for the Pottsvllle, Minersville, Shenandoah area.

Schuylkill County was never more shown for all it is than this forum that really does have a large cross section of viewers and posters. A lot of people just like to read the posts. I guess it is similar to staring at a car wreck.

Poor Bush Gets No Respect

From being dissed by foreign leaders of third world countries to the late night comics, President Bush has a hard time getting any respect. Most of this is his fault. No former President has problems speaking English more than Bush. He is often viewed as a cowboy or hillbilly and his policies are of no help.

Bush also is viewed as a spoiled child. His demeanor seems to be of someone trying to make his mark in the world and always falling short. Any business Bush has ever run did not do well or eventually went bankrupt. It really is no surprise that he has great difficulty managing a country.

It really is hard to imagine when the United States had such strained relations with foreign countries including our allies.

While Bush continues to slide in public approval ratings, he maintains a stubborn course that shows little promise. I believe most people are just holding their breath and hoping for good candidates for 2008.

God knows we need it.

I believe there was a time in Schuylkill County, PA when you could go to a store or business and be treated as a good customer. I mean afterall, I think customers are useful and important to a business. That just doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Whether I go to a coffee shop, restaurant, shop for appliances, or go for clothes; the attitude seems to stay the same. It's always these people with the shitty attitude that act like they are doing you a favor by letting you buy from them. Please people, I think your job depends on your customers. Is is too much to say, "Hello! Can I help you?"

Well, today on the Purple Page, it was picture day in Minersville for the school kids. Some people have commented that the Pottsville Republican is not a quality paper like it once was. Steve Irwin is still fascinating for some people. I know I'm a little twisted, but I have no real interest in seeing a guy get stung by a stingray and then die.

Gas prices are a big topic today, with some people saying the prices reported were false.

Belive it or not, some interesting posts had to deal with the history of Schuylkill County and where it was said you can find that information online.

Some of the typical bashing occurred as usual, until it was deleted.

History was made in 1996 when scientists Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell cloned a sheep. The scientists contend that cloning can produce more suitable laboratory animals, more productive dairy cows, and help reproduce endangered species. Cloning will allow a measure of control over life’s processes.
The cloning of laboratory animals is important for the development of new drugs. Currently, when animals are used in experiments they may have certain genes that give false results. This contributes to much longer testing on animals and can still have flawed results. With the cloning of animals, certain defects and genes can be isolated to obtain what is desired for the experiment.
Cloning may allow farmers to produce much more from livestock than normal. Currently, farmers will try to make their best producing livestock reproduce. Of course, with reproduction, nothing is certain and the offspring may not produce like the parents. This is known to happen to humans too. With cloning, characteristics such as milk production would be as high as those of the original cow.
Endangered species are also another area that can be helped greatly with cloning. When species of animals are endangered, the possibility of maintaining a good gene pool is diminished. If animals of low numbers start breeding with closely related offspring, inbreeding occurs and retardation can be the result. Cloning can allow the taking of good DNA samples, wait a period of years, and then release the cloned offspring to reproduce. This would be kind of like putting two new batteries into your remote control instead of four.
Cloning is of great importance and holds many beneficial elements. New drugs may be developed to fight, or possible cure, the diseases that hinder man today. Farmers may soon be able to have livestock that can help prevent starving in the world. Endangered species may be a term of the past, as we bring back large numbers of endangered animals. Scientifically, more arguments support cloning than those against it. We cannot ignore the wonderful possibilities.

Today's topics are about Sarge's Bar, a topic on some oral surgery, the Access card, a big drug roundup north of the county, and still some more about traffic tieups, crooked politicians and the rain cancelling the lawn mower races.

My comment is that the drug roundup wasn't as big as the newspaper would have you believe it was. The one guy was charged with public drunkeness and possession of a small amount of marijuana. So what that means really, is that the guy was in a place that got raided. Nothing more than a trumped up charge.

Really, how do you get public drunkeness when you are in a residence. They will just use that charge to get the guy to testify against others. If I was him, I would fight the charges. The charges are absolutely bogus and will easily be thrown out at the first hearing.

The drug roundup, as it was called, occurred in the areas of Ashland, Girardville, Ringtown, Lavelle, and Butler Township, Pennsylvania.

I guess if you don't do drugs or drink, you wouldn't have anything to worry about. Of course, this is Schuylkill County and everyone is almost expected to be addicted to something.

Just look around and listen to people. You can pick up on drug problems, drinking problems, overeating, and gambling very easily.

Today the discussion was on many topics. We had discussions concerning dogs, the closure of the JFK swimming pool, medical billing from home, and how to fix the Microsoft WGA problem.

Of course there is the off the wall stuff. A guy looking for a woman to have sex with, a guy asking users who they would hire for a job with their qualifications listed, and many other things.
